  • looooong reach

I just started up boxing recently and was body sparring a tall bloke with a huge reach. I had no idea how to counter him, every time id dodge his jabs i couldn't throw anything back cos he was to far from me. I tried gettin in close but hed pull back. any advice for boxing guys with long reaches?

Keep coming forward, throw something in his face to blind his vision then quickly step in and do your damage. If he continues to back up and you still can't do anything just corner him, kinda hard to back up if you're on the ropes. If he tries to spin out of it, get closer and throw your shots. He should be in an awkward position. Just repeat that and you'd do fine.

Oh, also, counter his jab with yours when you throw your jab back step in with it also. But remember, throw your combos or whatever you can while you're in cause you might not be in there that long. If you discourage him enough he's try to abandon the jab if he's getting countered too much.

yeah what versatile said.. cut off the ring.. and get inside on the back of good head movement (if it's body sparring i guess you cant really jab in?).. once inside it's your domain.. one of the most important things about fighting inside is to work the angles.. if you're both standing head on you wont sink much.. jag and pivot and smack that **** in the liver

ive had to spar with taller bigger and older guys my whole time in boxing (one sparring partner is 5''11 and weighs 72 kgs, im 5''2 and weigh 45 kgs) i usually find that i have more mobility than them, so use the ring but dont back up, circle around them and try to slip out side or inside of their jab, counter to the body and get out of their punching distance and continue circling, keep a very high workrate so you look more in control, its much easier for a tall guy to look in control than a short guy so you have to work extra hard, if you manage to back them up with some body shots, KEEEP ON THEM!! and push them back with fast punches, land some over the top if you have a chance, keep your hands high peek a boo style aswel and move your head

this has all worked for me , and ive only ever sparred with one guy my size, and he hardly ever comes to the gym anymore so i spar bigger guys exclusively, so it should work for u lol
