s'not about how long, its about what you do with the time. a kid whos been an amatuer for a year, enters the ny golden gloves and wins it is in a much better position to turn pro than a 3 year amatuer whos done nothing important/ has lost a lot of fights. its a strange question

If you aren't fighting 25 times a year, don't bother turning pro.

im 14 and ive just started to fight reguarly (0-1 and one exhibition fight) and i would like to turn pro around 20-22 years old ive been told i have talent but for my two fights (one real one exhibition) ive been matched with heavier older and more experienced guys so i know once i get an opponent my size experience or age ill start winning alot of fights but i was just wondering, down here in canberra ACT, you get guys who've been fighting amateur for say 3 or 4 years and they've only had 8 or nine fights?! i dont get this cos from ive seen in other cities and countries people whove been fighting for 4 years have racked up like 50 fights! is that normal to be fighting so sparingly in the ams?
