i'm just starting to incorporate squats into my routine to build explosiveness and i'm trying to cut down my weight. i know you can gain a lot of weight in your legs, so would squats be a bad thing to do if i'm trying to lose weight. if it does, is there anyway i can avoid it?

I was always told to increase power and strength you do 3 sets. Ideally on the 3rd set by 6 you should be wanting to stop and pushing yourself mentally to finish. If you're not like that, you increase the weight, not the amount of reps. A high amount of reps on a weight you're ok with is for toning and endurance.

You are not gonna gain any weight if you are not gonna have a large coloric surplass/ On the other hand doing squats will ingrease yout testosterone level which is an ultimate fat burner.

I recommend you do high set/low rep scheme for squats. lets say 8 sets of 3. That way you will be able to use more weight(which means your body will produce even more test) and have some caloric deficit or at least cut down on carbs.

wow, a lot of people here seem to think explosive power has to do with working out. anybody here live near chicago or milwaukee? i can at least demonstrate and show people how to get more explosive power in person.

I'm assuming you're talking about technique? No one is saying technique has no role in this, but the topic is whether weights can increase explosiveness or not. If the topic was "how do I adjust my technique, so I can punch harder/faster?", then that would be what people were discussing.

I think the reason there are more topics like this one instead of the one I just made up, is answered by you in your own post. Technique is better taught in person than over the internerd, whereas more theoretic stuff, like exercise choice, set rep schemes etc., are more suited for this medium.

                P. S. Are you saying "working out" (as in weights etc.) has no role in increasing explosiveness/power? You don't believe in physical adaptations to training, or is endurance the only physical trait that can/should be trained?

Hey PunchDrunk thanks for all the help so far.
But can you try give me a strict as possible explenation of how I should train doing pushups?
#reps, #sets, resttime in between sets, form of body while doing pushups, how slow exactly to go down...

And to the guy that said I should add more weight if the sets aint tiring me. How do you mean? Like a resistant band or a weighted vest or something?

Depends on what you're doing pushups for? Also, what's the most pushups you can do?

For explosiveness, I'd recommend doing some heavier stuff for strength, preferably a full body program since punching power is not just your arms. Along with the strength program, med ball throws, thrown like punches, are a pretty good way to convert some of that power to explosiveness. In this case, no more than 5 reps per "punch," and no more than 3 to 5 sets. You must not tire yourself out doing this. That is for endurance, which should be targeted in separate workouts.

I think you're confusing impact with ability...
Workout out is for ability, technique is for impact. I'm not sure but this seems logical to me. It's hard to believe that some 200 lbs lazy butterturtle could punch as hard as a 200 lbs boxer just by using the right technique...
