  • Sore hands/wrists

    Hi all,

I've been training for about 2 months now and have recently started to get really sore hands and wrists after my training sessions. Knuckles are ok, its the top of my hands and outside wrist that are hurting.

I'm wrapping my hands and using good quality gloves. If I ice up afterwards they seem to settle down.

Is this something that my hands should eventually get used to?

I'm worried that I turn a nagging short term injury into something more serious.

Any feedback into prevention/treatment would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

yea icing them is good, maybe you need to take some more vitamins or calcium or something. Also, when I started heavy bag training, I noticed my hands would get stronger and more resistant as I trained more and more. Maybe give it some time, or you can also try wrist curls and such.

Yeah you'll get used to it. Just a matter of time.

It's part and parcel of being a boxer i'm afraid - one thing i do when i get a bruised knuckle or aching fist/wrist - double wrap your hand with a second hand wrap. It really does take away some of the pain.

Yeah I thought about double wrapping, do I just wrap the second wrap exactly the same as normal or is there a technique to it?

Unfortunately, hurting hands is the ugly side of boxing people never talk about. Bruised knuckles, sprained wrists, jammed thumbs, sore fingers.

If it is bothering you to bad, give it a rest, but don't stop completely, just go easy on it. If you stop using it, you will lose strength in it and you will re-injure it as soon as you start using it again.

I have personally been dealing with a sore right wrist for about a month. You just have to keep on trucking.

My biggest concern was not being able to train hard. I skipped training yesterday, but will be back in the gym tomorrow. It's mainly the left hand so I'll just take it easy with that one. I was worried about things like stress fractures etc, but after icing all last night and all today its heaps better. I guess you develop that strength through you wrists and tendons in your hands that will help minimise this, and being new to the sport I'm sure my less than perfect technique isn't helping.
