When I first started boxing 6 years ago, I couldn't punch hard because I was young and I did not no how to punch and even after learning, my punches didn't have much power because my muscles were not developed. Slowly but surely I got stronger and my punches harder as time progressed and my wrist was fine with a 108" wrap and some small gloves that I can't even remember the weight of. After a four year break, I started boxing on the heavy bag and my punches were fierce! I used my old 108" wraps and wore 10oz gloves. After the first day I have a little soreness in my wrists, probably from a light sprain because I remember a slight pain when I hit the bag incorrectly. I thought nothing of it and went back to the heavy bad the next day. I woke up the morning after and I could not move my wrist at all, in any direction, and I couldn't apply any force to it or else it HURT! I couldn't write, drive or move my hand without a sharp unbearable pain. I relaxed my hand as much as possible for two days, and it got much better, but 40% of the pain was still there! I still could not move my wrist too much. I hit the heavy bag again after the two day break and the next morning, the same pain, but not as bad and my range of motion in the hand was better. My wrist hurt when I threw hooks on the heavy bag. Then I took another two day break and my wrist was at 25% of that original pain but range of motion was pretty good. The next morning the same pain but less intense and more range of motion in the wrist. After that I took 1 day breaks between boxing sessions and the pains were present after every session but significantly less each Time, until now, they are almost non existent after 3 weeks. Stretch your wrists and thumbs for 15 minutes after a heavy bag session and re wrap after every round, and the pains should not be too bad. Also get at least 1 day rest between workouts. Also, if you can, get 180" mexican style wraps, and pad heavily on the knuckles, then use 108" cloth wraps to secure your wrists. You'll be pain free in no time.
