Giants you mention that it is less stressful on the body. Do you realize what training is? It is stressing the body, forcing it to adapt and get stronger and fitter. Less stress = weaker workout.

If you have injury problems associated with running (like if you're overweight, and get knee problems), then that thing is a good alternative. Most likely though, most of you in here who swear by that thing, do so because it is in fact easier than running.

The heavier toll running takes on your body can be good and bad. Bad if you get injuries from it, good (as in better than the elliptical) if you don't, because you'll be conditioned to handle the impact running has on your body, so if you're not injured, go running instead and leave that thing for when you're injured.
+1. I switch to elliptical every so often instead of running, when my knees start acting up -- I have arthritis in both knees and running in the cold rain plays hell with me. A week or so on the elliptical and I'm back to running, again. I'd rather run.

You get a good workout on this machine- on the stairmaster too, I always use them for 30 minutes, one good way to sweat yo ass off.

It's as hard as you make it. Go 30 minutes on the hardest setting. That's 1200 calories/hour, equivalent to sparring. I use it when my knees are giving me trouble; I go 60 minutes at about 30% on the machine here at our apartment complex, equivalent calorically to a steady, six mile run.

Machines like that are still great for interval training. You can do your HIT workout on any machine if you do it right. If you dont believe me then go try it.

Hell, Juan Diaz doesnt even run, he uses the stair master.

They can be useful, I'll agree with that.

Maybe Juan Diaz could get rid of some of that flab if he tried running? Dude is fat...
