New to boxing

  • New to boxing

    Hello everyone,

    I am new to the forum & Just looking for some words of encouragement....I am just starting boxing at 28...I guess you will say i am an old man...However; I wrestled throughout all of high school and 2 years in college and have stayed in the gym religiously for 12 years...( i am very serious about training )

    I have always loved boxing and am just now starting with a trainer. One of the first questions he asked was if I plan to compete, my answer was yes...I cant imagine training for something and not being serious about it...

    I geuss I dont know what to expect...Everyone tells me i am too old but I am in the best shape of my life and have always been an exceptionally good athlete in whatever sport I chose.

    All I can say is that I am dead serious about boxing and am ready to sacrifice.

    Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    All i can say is just train hard and follow your instincts. youll know when your ready to copete and once you do, just think like a true fan and give the people, which make the stars who they are, them what yould like to be given as a fan, good fights. and it dosnt matter how old you are, your heart stys the same.

      I would simply recommend that you either slim down or bulk up (not sure of your current weight) so that your fighting weight is somewhere between 176-200lbs. Train hard for a good year, then go for a cruiser title. Good luck. You can do it!

        Good luck dude 28 is not too old to be honest starting now you will never make it big but you still have 15 years of Boxing in you.

        Enjoy it and just get as many fights under you as possible.

        Hopefully in a couple of years turn pro and enjoy it.

        No matter what shape your in still do roadwork as if you have to go 6 round in ya first fight you get knackered as your not used to it.

        Also train up the boxing as much as possible go 3 or 4 times a week.

          why choose that weight for him? he didnt even say anything about his weight or build, so why choose that weight for him? what if he wants fight lower?

          good luck to u man. age is only a number if u put ur mind into training and focus on that 100%, you can make it to the pros if thats what ur aimin for. good luck!

            Just trying to maximize his chances for a successful career. If he's never boxed until now, the future looks pretty bleak if he plans to undertake a career at welter-weight. Hey, his weight is whatever it's going to be. Obviously he doesn't have much control over what his optimal weight is. I was mostly just cutting on the cruisers.

              Just put in as much training as possible and you will have more fights more quickly.

                I am 260 lbs right now with about 16% body fat. I plan on losing about 30 lbs and I havent been under 200 since 97 so I will always be a heavyweight....I do alot of high intensity / low rest weight training with cardio as well. I plan on cutting down on the resistance training quite a bit since it will only slow me down.....

                  Detroit how tall are you btw?

                  If your about 6ft 4 and above dont try to lose too much weight as in the heavys that will help.

                  Just cause im a Heavy at 250 ish but im 6ft 5.
