In Russian and former Soviet olympic team they used light weights for shadowboxing with good success. 1-2lb and up to 4lb for heavy guys. It's like you do one punch (as fast as you can) for half a round with weight and than same punch without. Main thing is the weight you use should allow for nearly same movement speed as without weights. Point is not to train to punch slower as would happen with heavier weights.
