Hey guys. I dont know too much about the proper use of protein. I had a couple questions on what you guys think.
first of all, does protein HAVE to be a substitute for a meal? I usually work out at night, so I usually eat dinner around 6 or seven, then work out, and then drink a protein shake around 10 or 11. Is that adding too many calories for my diet?
Also, is taking protein at night a good idea? I know you're not supposed to eat at night because you wont be burning any calories and you'll gain weight. Is drinking protein the same thing?
Last question, when is it best to take the protein? before or after a workout? Thanks for the tips!

Need a little more info to answer some of those q's but if you're talking whey protein, which I'm assuming you are, take it right after you're workout, along with some simple carbs

If you usually stay solid at (whatever your weight is now) then your not adding to many calories. Your body needs them to add the ingested proteins to your muscles, plus your working out and burning cals anyways. Its probably best to take your protein right after you workout thats when your body needs it most. I used to take it before AND after I worked out (right after and an hour later) I made sure I had proteins in the blood while I worked out and kept em comin for a while after. A helpful tidbit is that it takes a half hour to absorb 30grams of protein. Some bodybuilders take casein protein which absorb slowly and release all night....I don't really know if it'll result in weight gain (fat) or not cause Ive never used it.

you should ingest your weight in protein.
I take it in place of a meal but I eat 6 meals a day every 3 hrs

        breakfast-shake-lunch-shake-gym-shake-dinner

whey is the best protein to take. I buy 6lbs of EAS whey for $25

You should take between 1-2 times your weight in protein a day. So if you weigh 80kg take between 80-160g of protein.

It doesn't have to be a substitute for a meal but alot of people do use it as a substitute.

The best time to take it is AFTER your workout. Whey protein digests really fast so the sooner you take it after your workout the better.
