So I've been stepping up my road work a lot over the past month or so and in the past couple days one of my shins has been feeling sore when I run on it. I'm assuming its shin splints, but know nothing about them at all. Do they go away with rest or whats the deal? Am I just screwed?

if theyre serious shin splints you could be somewhat ****ed, dont run on the sidewalk, use a track etc. the actual road is much better for you then the sidewalk. run on grass but that can be dangerous with pits etc. go to a doctor and see how severe they really are. guy on my basketball team had severe shin splints and he was out like every other game.

it feels like (and sounds like from the name) shin splints has something to do with the bones in your shin (the fib/tib bones) but actually its almost always muscular. the impact of your foot on the road causes the muscles to tense up to stop the bones from being damaged, this causes pain as it can impinge nerves etc. basically all you got to do is take a few days off (do something non weight bearing like swimming) and get back to running on a softer surface eg a track or grass

First off, stop working with the rope for a week or two, if you havent already. That is really tough on the shins
Second, my shins were killing me about a month or two ago, so i stopped running for a month and started swimming. It was really hard at first (I could only do 2 laps in succession my first time in the pool!), but after a week i was swimming at least 30 laps a day in succession, and then when i went back to running i noticed by stamina was so much better. Swimming will teach your body to be much more efficient with Oxygen, since you cant breath whenever you want. Another good thing to do in the water is swimming for as long as you can underwater, to increase your lung capacity. Taking some time off from running isnt bad, as long as you find something to replace it with.
