  • Boxing & Using Weights

ok i know alot of people in boxing disagree with weigts but i have some qustions to ask.

im quite tall for my age im 6ft 1 or somthing and im 15.
im not a thin person or fat. pretty avrage. bigger than alot of boys in over all size though.

however it seems i have no strength what so ever and ive noticed it throughout my life. i cant beat any body in arm wrestling and i meen anybody like even kids who are alot smaller in size beat me. i am easily thrown around. even by people who are the same in muscle size or smaller. and genrally weak when it comes to things like that even though im big.

ive been boxing for about a year now. spar lots go on bags skip .ect
my strentgh has never been a problem in boxing i use skill more.

i was wondering if you think i should do weights, dumbell lifts. things like that and if so what should i do. or is there anyting else to do to increse strength.

i know ricky hatton lifts weights and seems to have no problem with mobility r anyting like that.
and would a bit of body building do me any harm in boxing, eating lots and weightlifting while boxign regulary ?

With the wrestling and arm wrestling its probably because your still growing that you have less strength. 1) The shorter guys have leverage on you 2) They grow slower and have adapted better to their size. Ive read that you can make good power gains by lifting and doing plyometrics however I dont know much on that subject Id research it a bit if I were you. There are other guys on here that know much more than me on these things so I'd go with what they say I just thought I'd put in my 2 cents.

Lifting weights can be very beneficial if done properly. Stick to Bench Press, Squat, lunges, Rows, Military Press, Dead Lift, Chin ups/pull ups and Dips

This is how I incorporate weights into my training:

        - 30-45min run
        - 10mins stretching
        - light weights working calves, quadriceps and hamstrings stretching between sets
        - 90mins Bag Work
        - Upper Body weights.

The benefits are greater doing running then working your legs straight after you stretch because it teaches you keep pushing even though you feel tired. Same with doing upper body weights straight after you finish your Boxing drills. It improves your strength, stamina and conditioning. Doing weights even 15kg each side is sufficient because you still have the speed. Some trainers say that weight training isn't needed for Boxing which is crap!
