  • When lifting weights.. (question)

When I'm doing my lifting, should I be doing heavy weight and slow controlled reps OR should I be doing low-moderate weight and fast explosive reps?

There is no single answer. You use different methods to train different strength qualities. Maximal strength requires you move heavy ass weight for low reps. for explose or reactive strength the focus is on exploding/speed throughout the movement (and are NOT too be done too failure).

I prefer slow controlled reps. In complete control of the weight all the way through the set.

he is just scared and trying to give u the worst advice ever.

BBBB explosive and train for endurance. If you want to be a body builder then do sloooow reps to get that muscle shape. To get into fighting shape, do exercises that will help u in the boxing match, thats endurance and punching the bag and mostly sparring my brother. Spar, spar, spar, punch the bag, speed bag and you will be good.
