  • Should you imitate Winky Wright's defense?

Sam Peter demonstrates that it is a bad idea if the guy in front of you is as strong as Wladimir Klitschko.

Winky depended on his size against Welterweight and Super WW but when he fought Jermian Talyor and Sam Solimon it shows that he is not going to depend on it that much at MW e****ally if someone is a puncher

Indeed, the styles that work and are effective in lighter weights may not work too well for big guys and against big guys. The punching power factor is just amazing and sometimes the size difference just nullifies the effects of a good stationary defense.

Heavyweight boxing is a different sport and the set of skills that you need to be succesful is different from smaller guys.

Ive actually tried this in sparring... its a good and bad idea. I was blocking nearly every shot, and slapping the jabs away, but my own punches had waaay less pop because i couldnt get any leverage on them.

Agreed. One single mistake and you are flat on your ass. All of these guys can punch.

Exposed veins are indicative of very little subcutaneous fat. Try to see if you can find any of Sam Peter's veins?

Our gym teaches the high-guard, Winky-style defense. As long as you move laterally, weave a lot, and step with your parries, it works great. If you move straight forward or back, especially against a guy with a Mack truck for a cross, you're gonna get creamed. I'm no Klitschko but I can throw either hand right through a high guard -- it doesn't usually score, but it's intimidating as hell and usually knocks him back a step or two. It's a good way to get a guy's attention if he's playing too rough during sparring -- doesn't hurt him but lets him know that you could.

winky's defense is basically the foundation of defense. he jus keeps his hands up at ALL times and moves his head. thats what everyone should be doing. it's not hard to fire back jus if ur hands are fast enough and ur reflexes are good...
