I was just wondering, is there any benefit to standing there and letting someone hit you with hard body shots??? it would probably make your abs stronger and more conditioned to taking shots in a fight right?? I heard someone on this site say it's dangerous cuz you can permanently **** up your ab muscles or something like that, but if you do a couple of rounds a couple of times a week, it's probably not that bad, what do you guys think?

We do this at my thaiboxing gym alot. It does train the abbs, but its also important "impact training". We train 3x30 second rounds with constant "light" punches as well as using thaipads for heavier conditioning training. For example being struck in the lower abdomen when reaching the full horizontal position of a situp with such a pad.
I must say i have heard about the controversy of this type of practice from other trainers but i have yet to see any long term damage affecting either myself or any other boxers i know .

It strengthens your abs, but that's not to say that taking punches alone will give you ripped abs or anything like that. What it does is, it trains you to breathe while keeping your abs tight, and to keep breathing while getting hit. This makes you stronger against body shots; if you take a heavy hook to the liver or an uppercut to the solar plexus when your stomach is slack and you've just breathed out, it will put you on the canvas.

there is a right way and a wrong way to condition the body. one takes time and the other is more of a shortcut. one is beneficial in a healthy way longterm while the other yeilds quicker results but can end up causing damage long term.
serious conditioning is best taught by an expert in that skillset.

If youre against this type of training saying its a shortcut then i dont agree.
Practical work is always the best way to build experience in what it is youre training for. You can look like the best fighter in the world shadow boxing, but when youre in the ring with someone who can mess up youre rhythm you can be made to look like an ass.
Same with body shots. You can make your abs tough as you want, but when it comes to actually dealing with the impact of getting hit and having your breath taken away, theres only one way to farmiliarise yourself with it so that it doesnt disrupt you every time it happens. And thats getting hit lol.
