    Career Choice

    My brief story

I'm 20 yrs old and I attend St. Johns university. I'm a criminal justice major. I'm going to switch my major to Sports Management.

I'm not sure exactly what career path this will lead me into. All I know is, I want to train athletes for a living. Not a trainer at a commercial gym who shows people how to lose weight, or pack on muscle, but athletes who are serious about adding speed, or improving elsewhere in their athletic abilities. The closest thing I can think of is this guy named Ross Enamait. Some of you guys know have his books from rosstraningdotcom..

does anyone here do this for a living. I know punch drunk, you train athletes.

do people in this field get paid well? will my major even help me out in this field?

    thanks.

You should check out Parisi speed school in Jersey. It is an entire facility dedicated to what you are looking for.

Many professional athlete and olympians train there. You should go check it out and talk to some of the trainers there to get an idea of whats going on.

There is also Peak Performance and Ultimate Training center in manhattan. They are training alot of professional athletes out of those two facilities also. But there you pay the gym to use it with your clients and you charge your clients whatever you want. But you will need some clients for it too work.

Parisi is really cool though. A dream facility. I have only been there 2x. First Time though there were some Giants players working out, and Rhadi Ferguson the olympian. And a bunch of grapplers preparing for Abu Dhabi. It is a great place.

thanks for the reply, i would have to stay local. i am going to st johns for free.. it would be a shame to let a 26,000 a year education go to waste..
I am just curious to see if any1 here does this as a living..

If this is something that you want to do then the money shouldn't matter.

this is the job I'm hoping for, I'm doing a diploma in sport science (i'm in the UK) then i'll go to university and do a sports science degree then io'll take a certified strength and conditioning coach, I'll then either set up a gym with someone else or be a personal trainer at a commercial gym to get started and to build a client base. You have to start from the bottom and work your way up mate!

My experience has been in boxing and I know that boxing trainers are a dime a dozen. Most of them these days are barely competent. Nevertheless, there are lots of good trainers most of whom make little if any money in boxing. The lucky few make millions.

Much of your success as a trainer in any sport depends on your ability to influence people. You don't need a Phd to learn that.
