  • Countering the straight right

    I was on howtobox.com or whatever.. And I was reading the counterpunches.. And it says when you slip a straight right to throw a straight right.

    My first reaction when slipping a straight right would be a left hook or left hook to the body.. Would those be best or do I listen to the people who know what they're talking about and throw the straight right counter?

    Which way are you slipping the right? I think it makes sense to slip a right by going to your left (outside?) most of the time and then the hook would be a natural counter. If you're slipping to your right it puts you in a better position to counter with your own cross, but I think its harder to get out of the way of their cross. Its probably a good idea to mix it up but I think those are the most natural moves.

    Take that how to box site with a grain of salt. I've seen one or two articles where the author has gotten things mixed up and been corrected in the comments at the bottom.

      slip to the right, come back with a left hook

      slip to the left, come back with a right uppercut or a straight right

      catch the punch with your left and come back with a left hook (if ur fast enough)

      these are all orthodox stance of course. practice on those in like 1/2 time sparring and get good at it then it will be second nature...

        If you slip to your right doesn't that put more weight on your right foot making a cross the more natural punch to throw as you come back up? And the hook after slipping to your left for the same reason? Maybe I'm being mentally dyslexic but that seems backwards to me.

          if u slip to ur right, dont u step with ur left foot a little bit to get at an angle? thaz wut i do, and either punch would work fine, based on my ring experience anyway...

            I don't think I typicallystep with my left when I slip to the right unless I specifically want to go somewhere. Seems faster take a small step and drop to the right and then come back with a cross. I think thats the way I was taught anyway, but like you said either one should work if your balance is right.

              i was taught to ALWAYS be up on ur toes and always have ur feet moving whether ur on the defensive or the offensive. i NEVER have my feet stationary, EVER!

              when i slip punches, my feet naturally move... maybe im jus not explainin it right in words, but trust me it works...

                  either way dude.

                  slip to the right - come back with a straight left or a right hook

                  slip to the left - come back with a straight left or a left uppercut.

                    Slip inside and throw a body shot or an uppercut.
                    Slip outside and do a small spin and throw a left hook liver shot.
                    Slip inside and throw a over the hand right hook.


                    These are the things I do.
