  • Hate to do this, but...

Hey, I'm new to this forum and very, very new to boxing. So new I haven't started yet, but I had a question for you guys.

It may seem like a no brainer, but here's some background first.

I've been working out in a gym (combined cardio and lifting) workouts for a year and eight months now. I went from well over 30% body fat to where I am now at 11%. My goal is to get to 8% as soon as possible, but right now I'm just maintaining until Ramadan (my religious fast) is over in about three weeks. However, upon returning to losing body fat, I'm not looking forward to going back to the gym; it has become very monotonous and uninteresting, and I'm ready to pick up a sport. I have been conditioning my body to become very athletic over the past almost two years (In my past, I have consistenly been working out between 2/days five days/week up to 4/days 7 days/week).

So, starting Oct 10 I want to start boxing, but I only want to do it if I can get to 8% or lower if I train under a REAL trainer and a REAL program (not some adult fitness class bull****) 5 days/week paired with 5-6 small meals of clean foods in a calorie deficit. Also, I'll lift if I have to, but to my understanding boxing routines take care of that.

Anyway, what do you guys think? Can I use boxing (4-5 day/week, probably 5) and good diet as a catalyst to get to 8% (or lower) body fat?

After I get to my bodyfat goal, I want to focus on becoming the best boxer I can be.

dont bother taking boxing up if you arent going to fight ot have no love for the sport! find a sport that you will do such as football etc.! its not being harsh because you are the one being selfish if the boxing coach will give you his time instead of another up and coming boxer! although i could ahve read in to it wrongly and if youre intentions are correct go for it!

I don't think you read that last line.

I want to pick up a sport I can be passionate about. One that I can get good at and get excited for and put as much effort in as I did working out originally. I could have chose anything, but I chose boxing.

However, I have priorities. First, I want to get to my desired bodyfat goal that I've been chasing for a long, long time. Secondly, I want to be a boxer. Don't think just because I want to get cut first I don't care about the sport, you got it all wrong.

I just wanted to ask you guys if you think a calorie-deficit nutrition plan filled with clean foods every three or so hours paired with a 5 days/week training regimen could move me down 3% body fat.

Yeah boxing will do that easily for you mate, good luck with it. You defently have the determination seeing as you do the ramadan every year, my mate has to do that as well, i don't think i would be able to do that.

            Wait, 8% or 3%??

3%, forget it. Unhealthy, dangerous, and impossible to most people without starving half to death (and that might not even do it).

8%: If you take care of your diet, and train hard to become the best boxer you can be, the 8% will come from doing that. Much better way to do it too, because you can concentrate on something while achieving your goal. Nothing more frustrating than thinking about bodyfat all the time.

Yes, good news! Yeah, Ramadan is a challenge, but this year it is the worst it has been for me in my life because breaking fast now comes at 8 pm. (Because of shifts in the ******/western calender, Ramadan always comes at an earlier time in the year that in it did previous years). Though I am currently just maintaining bodyshape/bodyfat when I work out I have to work out during the day (and I always do combined workouts- cardio followed by weights). Also, being a student makes it that much harder. But I'm really not on this board to talk about how much of a challenge it is, I just wanna say thanks.

Haha! Yeah, as pointed out, I wanna lose three to get to eight. And I TOTALLY agree with what you said about it being the best way to do it because I can concentrate on something while achieving my bodyfat goal. For the past 1 year and 8 months my mind was CONSTANTLY on working out/bodyfat. I was just doing blind aerobics in the gym for the sake of getting in shape. Now, I've outgrown the gym and am ready to learn a new skill and get good at something, hopefully that something being boxing. You nailed it.

Anyway, it sounds to me that you guys agree that boxing 5x/week paired with good nutrition (clean foods every three hours in caloric deficit) will be more than enough to get me down 3% bodyfat. If I start Oct 10th, hopefully by Christmas break I'll be down to 8%. Does 2 months sound feasible?
