4 one its not called the philly shell thats some **** fight night made up. Its a old defense style that called the shoulder roll. Alot of fighters use it when they are on the ropes, but some like floyd mayweather use it all the time and mastered it. Yea its a easy style to pick up on but its takes a lifetime to master. Im still working with it but its done me good in tournements. But yea u got to keep ur eyes open and feel ur opponent, ook at his tendacies. also its a great counter-defense style because ur rolling and ****ing your arm. you can just unload on somebody everytime they try to hit u.

I had the same problem after sparring the first few times, just remember to keep your elbows in that way they aren't going to go through your defence. Also watch the timining of there punches, if they are offloading a flurry on you, time it so when there left lands hit out a right. Many times there punches become wide as your protecting your face and middle, these punches take longer to get back so are much easier to counter.
Also set yourself a goal in there to only counter punch so you are on the recieving end, that will make your defence much quicker. Also allowing you to just watch as your not worrying about launching an attack, taking note of any tells they may have. Also try incorporate slips, once you get good at picking their jab you can do the pendulum step like Ali, constantly rocking back and forth off your front and back foot in and out of range, when they jab "rock" backwards then explode forward with your own jab, then take it from there. These tips helped me out a lot so hopefully they might be able to help you.

To find openings move. Use head movement circle around and when they miss throw your shots. Dont forget to keep your hands up and to bring your hands back once you throw your shots(most common mistake for beginers) give it time and you'll be more comfortable in the ring and then you'll be alot calmer and be able to look for openings and wont be so suprised when you see a punch coming at you and you'll be able to slip it.
Like the others have basically said it'll come with experience.
Good luck bro!
