  • Train at 2 min or 3 min rounds?

When planning to compete at 2 minute rounds. Should you train with 2 minute rounds and keep it intense or should you go 3 minute rounds to insure you dont gas.

I say train at 2 minute rounds. Get your body clock inline. You can pace yourself for that - therefore when its time to compete you will know exactly how much gas you got in the tank at every stage.

Have you ever tried actually timing the rounds of an amateur fight? The clock is stopped often during rounds, which means that an actual round is more like 2.15 to 2.30. If you go 2 minute rounds in sparring, inactivities during the round will be part of the 2 minutes. Therefore, an actual round will feel longer, and you have to concentrate for longer than 2 minutes a round in an actual fight. Training 3 minute rounds, and cutting them to 2.30 and 2.15 the closer you get to a fight is the way to go IMO.

I train at 3 min rounds but only plan to compete at 2 min rounds. Stamina is my biggest problem right now. However, I have read that training in rounds longer than you plan to compete can be bad because you learn to pace yourself for that length of round, and therefore may not have the intensity of someone prepared for a 2 min round. I try to watch that, to make sure if I am training at 3 min, I am prepared to go intensely the whole time.

i would mainly train 2 min rounds for an AM fight, but i throw in 3 minute rounds twice or three times a week, jus to build stamina. but ur trainin to fight 2 minutes, so IMO its better to train as hard and fast and intensely as possible for 2 straight minutes. u still need the 3 minute rounds, and sometimes i do one minute rounds of jus non stop power shots, and 4 minute rounds of moving around the bag and jabbing the whole time. ask ur trainer what he recommends for u...

Emanuel Stewart suggests that amateurs should train for 2 minute rounds, if you train for 3 minute rounds, you learn to pace yourself, and you arent to your full effectiveness on fightnight
