I do roadwork 2 or 3x/week. On off days, though, I do the elliptical for 45 minutes to an hour. I'm older than most of you and my knees aren't so good. Every few months I end up doing the elliptical for a couple of weeks solid (no roadwork) just because my knees / feet / shins get so sore.

you have to run on a incline using the treadmill to get the same effect of running on flat road, so I don't even think its possible for a treadmill to give you the same effect as hillwork or running up a steep slope during roadwork

Elliptical trainer. Like a treadmill but the motion is like cross-country skiing. Low-impact but still an excellent, whole-body cardio workout; the resistance is variable. I do sprints on the elliptical trainer the same as I do when running -- easy pace for a few minutes, 30- or 60-second sprint, easy pace, sprint, etc.

Keeeps you consistent even when you speed up.. you won't slow down without knowing like everyone does when they jog...
Throw some music in with a water bottle and your set.
