as long as your working out your ab muscles and feeling a burn, I dont think it should matter, I'm sure you also build stablizer muscles, being that you have to balance yourself on the ball

A ball is fine for ab exercises. Especially if you hurt your back doing them on the floor.
You CAN hurt your back on a ball also though. I used to get some pain from doing weighted crunches on a ball. But if you press your pelvis upwards as you're doing the crunches, then it should be fine. I know it sounds a little kinky, but it's actually true.

I think your talking about a SWISS-BALL
And it is actualy better than regular sit ups on the floor..It' gives you a longer range of motion and will help the stabilizer muscles...
You could also try putting a towel uinder your back...simple and effective

I was told by my trainer that you should do fullsit ups on the floor. Granted, the gym floor is made of rubber, but he says it will strengthen the lower back. I don't know if doing situps on a stabalizer ball will work the muscles in your back. Eventually, doing sit ups on the floor will not hurt...unless you pulled it or something.
