  • Will I be a Failure If I Don't Watch What I Eat?

As of right now, since I'm not fighting, I don't care about my weight. I don't care about staying low in weight, 'cause frankly, I've never had to before. I was always fit and healthy.

See, I'm duel sporting, with boxing as a secondary sport to my primary, and frankly, more demanding sport of gymnastics.

Though I love boxing, and I want to be able to participate in at least one amature fight before I head off to college.

So I'm thinkin', do I need to start paying serious attention to the things I eat? I'm 6' and weight about 160 on most days. What is that, a middleweight? That's a pretty tough class right?

You won't be a failure, no. If you're 160 right now, you could probably drop to at least 152...141 depending on your body type, but I would really be surprised if you had that much weight to lose. 152 should be easy for you to make, especially if you walk around at 160 and don't watch your weight too much.

Really, if you're just trying to make weight, you could drop to 152 in a day or two...However, what you eat has more effect than just gaining or losing weight. So while you can maintain your current diet and make weight easily, your body won't be in top shape.

You can still have a decent amount of success as an amatuer boxer without doing a lot of dieting. You sound like you just want to dabble in boxing, which is ok. But if you have any desire to make it to the top, then yes, you need to eat a good diet.

If your planning to compete and only dabbling with training and your diet, your gonna be confronted with a very rude and painful awakening. Its either 100% or nothing, in my book.

I don't really agree with that. A person can still be relatively successful by training hard but not eating well. It will take more work than if you don't eat well, but it's still possible to compete and win a few fights if you don't eat particularly well.

Of course, I'm not talking about eating fast food every day...just a reasonable diet.

What i meant was, that he is taking this as a hobby away from his main past-time which is gymnastics. Although i think a good diet is important - i agree with you that some boxers can have an easier time than others with maintaining weight.

I've played many sports, but i've never known a sport which requires so much commitment to compete at the lowest level. if you are not training atleast 3 times a week and sparring week in week out and putting in the roadwork on the days in between then you are not doing enough.

A mate of mine is 5ft8 he trains hard 5 times a week, he eats and drinks what he likes and is always 10 stone exactly. People metabolisms are different though, some people need to watch their diet aswell as train hard or they'll balloon up in weight.

this is a very simple answer, eat more calories than you burn and you will lose weight and the inverse is true as well.

Alright, thanks guys. I'll keep that in mind.

I have been laying back on the foods, which is something I never did before. I've never watched what I eat, as I am always pretty healthy and fit, but I could always lose a few.
