  • what kind of advantages does a southpaw actually have

People are always telling me I got an advantage cuz i'm a southpaw, but what advantages do southpaws have against orthodox fighters??? I can't seem to utilize this "advantage", are there any combos or tactics, etc. that are supposed to work well for southpaws??

We (orthodox) can hit you in the liver, way easier. Have fun!

The biggest advantage a southpaw has is the fact that he average othodox fighter will have few chances and few opportunities to train and spar with southpaws. Therefore they are not used to boxing against someone who fights with a leading right hand. Because the southpaw is jabbing with a right and crossing with the left and throwing fast right-hooks it means that his opponent must also defend in an opposite fashion in a sense. Everything is backward, and it IS strange.

I sparred against a southpaw a week ago from another gym and he was very confusing, especially the way it was unusual that an orthodox jab was not seen, which is the primary and staple punch for most amateurs.

I agree becuase i'm a southpaw and when i start useing right hooks my opponent gets caught everytime which is good as my right hook is my best shot.

Yeh, Mickey is right. Most people are orthodox, so most orthodoxes will spar other orthodoxes, while southpaws will spar them too. Southpaws will be used to sparring the orthodox, but the orthodox wont be used to sparring the southpaw.

I can switch. I'm naturally left handed, but I took up an orthodox stance and then switvhed around a bit. some of my best combinations are when I switch around.

The southpaw from the other gym i sparred with, had, the week previously, fought and lost to a fellow southpaw. He too was not used to fighting with southpaws and told me how awful it was and awkward.

Another thing is - southpaw to orthodox ratio is not the same as right handed people to left as many gyms will force a left handed fighter to train as a right handed fighter. If you catch my drift...

Southpaws eh? I found it tough, getting hit with a right hand jab all the time. it was very unusual - in the 2nd round of our sparring i switched and boxed in a southpaw stance also - and made progress upon him - only problem was - he was STILL a better boxer in southpaw than me. So ... i still got ****ed up by him. It did confuse him though, so that was a bonus.

If you have chance to spar with a southpaw, go for it. its valuable experience.
