  • What do I need to spar

I will eventually work up to sparring (not in a club)

We have 10oz gloves (is this ok, some people telling me I should get 16 oz)

    We will get gumshields.

Do we need headgear? And wraps? Im guessing a yes for both.

Before anyone jumps in with "go to a club" Cant for the moment

Go to a club. Seriously "sparring" against untrained opponents is actually just fighting, and you're not insured. It's much safer and healthier to work on your technique while you wait to go to a club.

As for sparring gear, 16oz gloves, a jock/groin protector, handwraps, mouthpeice and headgear. You can't spar in 10oz gloves, that's like wearing no gloves at all.

He's not untrained he boxed as an amateur.

And I dont see how 6oz will make much difference, but Ill check it out.

it feels alot heavier than you think, it sounds pointless though mate and what sort of a fighter is he if hes going to spar a completely inexperienced lad with 10oz gloves? he would knock your head clean off and hurt you if he was any good... its not just 16oz gloves you need, you need 16oz sparring gloves, huge difference, be careful anyway

You need to buy your own gumshield, not be given one.

You need far bigger than 10oz gloves.

They should provide the headgear but if they dont then you need your own.

And you need to know how to defend yourself before you go into the live fire.

I can see why his friend wants to spar with an inexperienced lad - theres a number of reasons - Sparring is fun, for one. Perhaps this ex-amatuer is also enjoying passing on his knowledge. Not only that, why would he knock anyones head off? Sparring is about practising boxing, you don't win a spar.

As for the glove size. Get 16oz. For the protection of your hands on a personal level, but it will also make sure blows to your opponent less severe as your hands are moving slower.

Like Exige says - your gym should provide you with alot of gear, although your own mouth guard is an essential - never spar without it - your not just protecting your smile - your protecting yourself from a broken jaw.

Don't risk hurting yourself mate, get to a club work your way upto sparring then, you will be more confident in your ability and you will fare well. If this guy beats you bad you will lose confidence and it will damage you mentally and physically

You need to train at an actual boxing gym before you even think about sparing. Our gym requires 8 weeks of training before they let you in the ring.
