  • turning the hips

    Ive spend a while researching why the hips are turned throwing a punch.

    If I say that to most people on here they will say "To put your bodyweight into it."

    But I'm not sure. It seems that it may be to increase speed and acceleration rather than anything.

    Because turning your hips doesnt make your hand or arm heavier which is the impact tool.

    And the body isnt always directly behind the punch so its not adding any mass behind it.



    So it would seem that it is speed.

    Although, A lot of heavyweights hit slowly but with a lot of power?

    its for speed and power, because your bodyweight is what makes the punch fast and powerful, otherwise, they are arm punches.

      I also like to push down on my foot a lot while twisting to get a fater and more powerful swing.

        I know its just an arm punch.

        But Im wondering if the body just adds speed nothing else.

        Speed is part of power.

          nah the body definitely adds power AND speed. its not like turnin the body into a punch (the proper way) is only gonna get 1 of 2 attributes, if u punch right, im certain the hip snapping plays a role in both speed and power. u say speed is a part of power, but i think its vice versa. "With speed comes power" thats a big sayin boxing

            yeh.

            a 1 tonne car travelling 60 mph will do more damage than a 1 tonne car travelling at 30.

            what Im saying is that speed is what may be making that power.

              explain your method a bit more. you may be desribing the basic way i train some punches.

              your body is longer than it is wide. think about it.



              its for speed and power, because your bodyweight is what makes the punch fast and powerful, otherwise, they are arm punches
              not just putting bodyweight behind the punch. there are many things that have to work together. and, actually, falling forward for a punch is only one method. i prefer a different one most of the time because of added control for one thing.

              just to make sure you know this - there is not one right way to punch. you know that though, right?

                what if the car traveling at 60 mph is made out of plastic and the one traveling at 30 mph is made of solid steel? does your theory still hold?

                    in any sport that requires speed and power the hips and the torso provide the power. Weight shift. Look at any good athlete in any sport watch tiger woods, barry bonds they all have tremendous weight shift..some in boxing throw the weight..
