relax. They key to speed in anything is being relaxed. If you look at all the fast fighters they are always loosey goosey in the ring.

shawn_, thanx for stealing my basic answer!!!

a boxer should recognize that there are so many different types of speed.

one basic rule of speed in boxing is that the techniques that you use have to be ingrained so that they are of a natural reaction. i bet it sounds like common sense, right? but how many of you guys have really taken a look at how to do this?

not only do you have to practice the punches thousands of times a week, you have to engage in a slower to faster sparring progression with the right frame of mind. not only should punching with an uppercut and straight right for example be natural, your use of them has to be as well. refined in how they are applied. and this is just one frame of practice.

a little something extra - there should be no "block then punch." they will be the same when you are good.

        Circuits will build speed
        Shadowbox
Shadowbox while moving only throw 1-2's with 21/2 lbs
        then with 1llb
        then with 12ounce gloves
and finally take off everything even the wraps and throw combonations for 1 solid round this will build quickness and explosion, which will give you more snap and faster harder shotz.

i like handspeed drills. u use like 2 or 3 pound hand weights and do punch drills like

                1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2 (weighted)
                same unweighted
4-3-4-3-4-3-4-3 (right uppercut left hook) (weighted)
                same unweighted
2-3-2-3-2-3-2-3 (right cross left hook) (weighted)
                same unweighted
ALL THESE AS FAST AS POSSIBLE WITH PERFECT FORM

make up 2 punches that go together and punch with weights about 8 times and then without weights. sometimes i'll change it to 4 punchouts or 6, depending on the day. also medicine ball throws like chest pass, side throws, overhand throws, slams, etc work wonders for hand speed and explosiveness. jus some ideas there hope they help.

the thing is with weighted punches is that most of the extra force is going downwards, so its not really what you want, although it would work for uppercuts

I recently started doin a similar thing, and found it's really helped me so I can vouch for this advice.
