  • Are shoulder rolls difficult?

It would appear that Nickolai Valuev can do shoulder rolls, so they can't be all that hard!

It takes much less time to get your shoulder in front of your chin than it does to throw a right cross. You can teach a ten-year old to shoulder roll effectively.

I would say it is difficult for the simple reason that I have only seen some of the most skilled fighters use it i.e. JT and PBF. DLH gave shoulder rolls a go for a few years and he was never able to really get it.

It depends on your style. DLH is better off blocking with his hands and arms because he's less effective on the back foot. You can't keep your weight forward and defend with the shoulder, I don't think.

Yeah, but what I'm commentiting on is the difficulty of learning and using it, not what style its most effective with.

DLH obviously wanted to incorporate it into his style because he hired Mayweather Sr. However he was never able to really make it work for him which leads me to believe its not that easy to do.

If your hands get caught down because you miss a punch in it a good reflex to just tuck your chin into your shoulder and back away, which is what Valuev is doing in that picture I think. Valuev does not have a shoulder roll style that is for sure.

One thing you have to remember if you want to try to shoulder roll is that there is going to be a pretty significant part of your head that is always open. It can protect your chin good though.

i only do it when im dominating and its not hard when you get into a rythem you just gotta see his punches coming, i never do it first round though i like to get a feel and time his punches before i start to try it. You also have to be quick its a great thing to counter off of i love to shoulder roll to a nice up jab

The principle of shoulder role is rather easy but as someone mentioned it depends on your style and you also got to have very good reflexes, footwork and balance to come with it or a lot of experience.

Its easy to do, but incredibly hard to master.
