What I've been working on, is keeping my hands in a "binoculars" guard, and using my obliques to lever my whole trunk down and inside, or down and outside; this accomplishes three things: 1.) it slips a punch; 2.). it gives me an unorthodox attack vector to counterpunch from; and 3.) it covers the legal part of my midsection without moving my arms much. Practice in front of a mirror: slip without moving your hips. You can also practice in a seat or in your car.

'Tatoes, this is what I was working on when I got my eardrum busted last week, BTW -- zigged when I should have zagged. I'm getting better at it, FWIW.

Most opponents are headhunters, right or wrong that is just the way it is. So that is what you need to worry about. Learning how to defend against body shots is not easy to do, especially if basic defense of the head has not yet been perfected. First you should learn how to prevent your head from becoming the club punching bag, then gradually you will figure out how to minimize the number of body shots you will take. It is a matter of showing angles, block and countering. Remember every time a guy tries to hit you with the lefthook to the body, he creates an opening. You have to postion yourself correctly to exploit this opening.
