  • how to protect the body while keeping hands up?

I always have a huge problem when it comes to protecting the body, and I think it's cuz I keep my hands high all the time, can someone tell mehow to keep the body protected while having my hands up in my stance?? cuz whenever I keep my head protected I leave my body really exposed to punches constantly.

tuck your elbows in....Keep your hands at about cheek level, right under the eyes...and tuck your elbows in...You'll be protected from your face to about the bottom of your ribs,....

I do that, and it keeps my sides protected, but it's the body punches to the stomach I'm having trouble with.

yah u gotta keep ur elbows IN, and protecting as low as ur ribcage goes... someppl have bigger ribcagesm but elbow in, at bottom of rib cage then the fists will be right at chin level to protect hooks and upperts to the chin... to protect str8 punches while keeping the elbows in u gotta move the head and move ur legs, and also, in boxing its a tough thing to block body and head at same time... no matter how good u are, some will slip through if ur eatin 5-6 shot combos... jus keep ur eyes peeled and watch the shows as they come, if u stay relaxed it helps, its a tough thing, i have my problems with it too. hope my advice helps. it helped me.

Are you taking mostly crosses to the midsection and chest or hooks? If straight punches are hitting your abs, you might not be standing sideways enough. Of course when you fire off punches, your twisting into the other persons range i guess.

The defense against body punches is all the usual stuff as it translates into your own personal style. Have you learned how to block and counter? Do you know show to show angles? Is you defensive posture tight enough? Are you standing in front of your opponent and doing nothing?

I have a great big m----f---in' chest (for a boxer), 46", with a 31" waist at 5'9", 175 lbs. I have a pronounced taper with a massive ribcage, and hence a ***** of a time keeping my torso covered.

What I've been working on, is keeping my hands in a "binoculars" guard, and using my obliques to lever my whole trunk down and inside, or down and outside; this accomplishes three things: 1.) it slips a punch; 2.). it gives me an unorthodox attack vector to counterpunch from; and 3.) it covers the legal part of my midsection without moving my arms much. Practice in front of a mirror: slip without moving your hips. You can also practice in a seat or in your car.

'Tatoes, this is what I was working on when I got my eardrum busted last week, BTW -- zigged when I should have zagged. I'm getting better at it, FWIW.

there is no solution. That is why you go to the body to bring the hands down, then go upstairs. you just have to think on your feet and if you feel they are planning on going upstairs, you gotta give them the body and protect it the best you can.
