I sparred for the first time today at the gym i was well good. Even though i got beaten about abit as i had anticipated i enjoyed it one thing was bothering me though the trainer says i should box as im a tale southpaw. But i find i cant get my punches to connect as im not that fast. I believe i'm far more effective in close as i hit quite hard and i did my better work inside of my opponents but my trainer says otherwise what do you think i should adjust to what my trainer says or do what feels more natural. tnx

If its your first time sparring you should listen to your trainer for a while and if after 4 or 5 more sparring sessions you havent noticed a difference then let him know that its not working for you and tel him you want to try something else and if he says ok and you impress him he'll let you have your own style. Its important to listen to him though or hel think your just some ignorant child (what age are you btw??) and he'll not want to train you much!!

the first thing you need to learn in the ring is that you WILL miss more than you hit. There is no getting around that. Its frustrating at first, but once you get used to missing alot more than you hit, you wont have any problem boxing from outside.

if your tall then your trainer probably thinks you should be fighting on the outside to use your height and reach advantages...if you try to fight against a shorter opponent on the inside, you'll be giving him advantages and playing his game.
If i were you, i would listen to him, but also work on your jab and back hand the most, the simple one two shot is very important for the outside fighter.
Try to wear as heavy gloves as possible and really try to get some snap in your jab...
when sparring, double or triple the jab up,
the guy you are sparring with will become confused and back up, then you can **** in some short upper cuts or hooks and then tie him up or move back and to the sides.
