Its exhaling air as you punch, meaning if you get punched at the same time your not going to get winded as your stomach tenses as you exhale sharply!!

Heres an extract from the boxers section: "A boxer who adopts correct breathing methods will not only greatly improve his stamina, but will also by this means strengthen the more vulnerable parts of the body, which will make him less likely to be knocked out. A boxer should respire regularly and deeply through the nose the whole round. If he holds his breathe when making specially severe efforts, he will soon get out of breathe. And if he respires through the open mouth, he runs the risk of biting his toungue, and, what is much worse, the blows he gets on the jaw will hurt him severely."

It gives 2 and a quarter pages on boxing but the whole book is actually really good!

is it better to exhale while punching, from the nose or mouth?

i think mouth is more common, though.
