  • Really need to get back in shape

Hi! I am wondering if anyone can help me in this matter. I have been boxing since I was 14. I am now 27. I was a heavy trainer and super fit back then. I made it as far as sparring, but injuries always stopped me from fighting, thus I never managed to get my med cert. I was always a great prospect at super middle - light heavy. But then I ripped my chest & back muscles severely and that affected my breathing when I was 20. I didn't train for about 3 1/2 years. But I would like to believe I am back again but confidence is low & morale. Coz over the years I have not trained I am now weighing 24st 6lbs (341lbs). I would like to know if anyone knows a great routine for me to use to get the weight down rather sharpish. Jogging is out at the moment coz my back is killing me. I don't look grossly overweight I am a big fella. Before the chest injury I was a trim 15st. Also I began training recently but I had a weird shoulder pain. It turns out it is a torn rotator cuff. Does anyone how long it takes for it to heal? I hope someone can help as I wanna give boxing one last push so I don't live to regret that I never gave it a shot. I was touted as being one of the best talents around but I never got to fight in the ring to really measure myself.

hey man you have the first step. Your confidence will go up when you start seeing results. As far as movement and exercise for a big guy not used to carrying round so much weight i would start out by swimming. do a little (20 mins) of shadow when you wake up on an empty stomach. Eat lean man....5 meals a day..lean and lo carbs ..oatmeal, chicken , tuna veges, sweet potatoes, protein shakes and such. Take a multi vite drink **** loads of water everyday. Its easy to lose weight if you make your mind up. once a week have a meal that you totally splurge and over eat whatever you want this way you satisfy a cravings for the next week. As far as swimming its easiest on the joints...get in the pool to start than after a while you can start with some light jogging. fat is lost in the kitchen not the gym..remember that and good luck..if it helps at all I started boxing at 27. DO IT man NO REGRETS

Well done for getting back into training mate. I injured my rotatory cuff a while back doing a heavy bench press. I don't think it was torn but it took about a 3 week lay off before I was able to lift weights again.

Thankx 4 The posts & support fellas, very much appreciated. I have been drinking around 3-5 pints of water a day for a while now. Also does anyone know any great ingredients for protien shakes & vitamin shakes? And is the recumbent bike any good as I can't swim coz of my shoulder? What's the best routine also 4 losing weight? I got my own boxing gym that my old man built when things looked promising. I got a 4ft bag, recumbent bike, treadmill, speedbag, eleptical trainer & weight bench (and essentially skipping rope).

In your heart you must know what you need to be eating and training. From your post, it sounds like you've been round boxing nearlly all your adult life and back as a 14 year old and a heavy trainer you knew what worked and what didn't. I reckon the problem is, not injuring yourself further, with you current larger stature.

Swimming proberbly an option, but you know, what about getting on a rowing machine.

As for dieting, just cut back WHen you want some sweet, eat an orange or another fruit you like. Cut out ANY kind of junk, cut out the booze and eat boring ****e. Keep yourself busy to forget about comfort eating and just keep percievering. Weigh yourself once a week, and the further u lose it, the further your confidence will grow and the more things you will be able to do in the gym.

Treat yourself once a fortnight though, have a steak, or a couple of bottles of beer if your training and dieting was entirely good in that week.

I feel for ya mate. But you can do it.

I have started to eat right...finally! I don't eat anything after 7pm. Drink loads of water (about 4-5 pints a day). I got my physio appointment on Wednesday. I lost 7lbs since my last post. Once I start training it'll drop quicker. I am itching to train, I keep grindin' my teeth at the thought of it and clencing my fists on occasions. I hope the boxing bug is about to bite again or at least bitten already.

Severe caloric restriction 24/7, maybe 1800 cal/day, every day for the next few months, and lots of walking. That's the only way. When you fail, which I imagine you will, you might want to consider some kind of bariatric surgery, as that much weight will kill you. I'm not being a smart ass. A recent Journal of Obesity article listed dieting as the leading cause of obesity. It either leads to binging, or people lose the weight and gain back more. We live in an obesigenic environment where we can get all the food we want anytime we want with little motivation not to eat too much, and sedentary jobs with lots of reason not to exercise. You and me and a lot of other people need to make a permanent commitment to a reasonable diet and daily exercise...
