sorry for getting back to you just now. i don't really check in on BS forum until later in the day - i'm usually training in the atfernoon.

      from the article:

Martial artists are often taught to breathe out heavily when struck in the stomach, to minimize this effect.
exhaling is coordinated with releasing power. basically, breathing out sharply increases the internal pressure in the abdomen area. even more so, there are specific breathing techniques that make this coordination more efficient than your everyday regular breath. i will go into a bit more detail below.

      also from the article:

When the abdomen is struck, a large difference in pressure occurs across the diaphragm.
this is a key sentence in understanding. in some martial arts practices, you can be trained to control the level of pressure inside the body. this is what stops a strike from penetrating enough to disrupt your breathing. furthermore, there are exercises which are specific to strengthening the solar plexus. they are part of what is known as the "iron shirt" or "iron body" skills.

now, natural deep breathing(which is different than what the regular untrained person does), and a certain method of breathing referred to as "reverse breathing" naturally strengthens the diaphram through movement that a normal person does not get. deep breathing also offers a contraction and expansion that strengthens the elasticity of organs and increases the blood flow that helps push out toxins and keeps toxins from accumulating. this is why there is a whole field of study devoted to breathing in traditional chinese medicine.

hope i explained that right. i don't really have the academic mind state right now. feel free to ask me any questions. just keep in mind that i'm online mostly at night time. btw, i really don't consider myself a master.

here's a link i found. i did not read through all of it, but a quick glance of the diagrams looks to be the same way i was taught some 8 or 9 years ago:
