I didn't know that about sugar. I just always thought the hangover was caused by the booze being a diuretic and that you become too dehydrated.

I like a beer but I try to drink a mix of beer and water on a night out, this stops dehydration, lowers the calorie intake and helps with the hangover.
Plus you can be merry, enjoy the night and still be in control!
