I need some advice I going back to the gym after being out for a year should I start off back with the basics of boxing for a while or should I just get right back into the hard training I used to do before the lay off

Well i did what your doing, and i was "going back" for at least 3 months before i actually did. Get fit again until you know you'll be ready and when you first go back, train lightely but instead of taking it really slowly like you did when you first started, go a bit quicker, not too quickly or you'll get ahead or yourself and die
