  • Defensive problems against southpaws

Today i was in with a southpaw and i havn't been in there with a southpaw for months... and i was having big probs with it. I was in with a less experienced guy and was just in there to work on my defense. Anyways, i just kept getting lazy and just completely forgetting that he was a southpaw and got caught with like five good straight left hands in 3 rounds that i just didnt see coming. Normally against orthodox people i'm very evasive but my evasiveness is total **** against southpaws. I completely destroyed this one southpaw dude months ago but thats because i was aggressive. I can't seem to be nearly as evasive against southpaws and ill get tagged quite a bit unless im agressive with straight rights. It's also probably because i'm so used to parrying with my right hand and im not nearly as good at parrying with the left hand so at times i would parry the jab with my right and eat a flush straight left. Im hoping after a few more times in there with southpaws it will just click but i defend like an idiot against southpaws.
    Anyone else experience this prob?

I'm a southpaw and am having trouble with straight rights from orthodox fighters. Turnabout's fair play, I guess.

        Against southpaws

The most important punch is a fast snappy FULLY extended jab.
        Type of Jab
Now this can't be a snappy jab like Ali... it must be a mayweather type snap jab.

I.e. the type of jab where your shoulder comes up to protect your chin. and after you through it you must fully retrun to your COMPLETE stance...which means your elbows back to protecting your ribs
        BECAUSE
their hook hand is on your jab side and it is very easy for a southpaw to dodge a jab and hook to the ribs against convential fighters....
        ALSO
while you are jabbing step to the left which should be natural for a right handed fighter. basically staying outside the right foot like KANMAN said.

        While
your stepping to the left and jabbing stationary though (some can move and jab but thats not too safe...I do it but thats me) you should be able to set up the right hand...if his right hand is up go ahead and throw that straight and pound his glove... mix it up to the body and if that is un-effective go ahead and throw that lead right hook but follow with the left to the body...then back up if he hasn't squared up with you yet.

I hope this helps you a lil....

This approach requires a decent pace
If you can't throw Jabs for 6 mins straight this might be a lil tough if you don't have good movement and accuracy.

Imma go on ma lunch break... BRB to hit up southpaws against Convents... 1

There are any number of ways to deal with southpaws, but how you do it will depend largely on your style. How would you describe your style?

we i am a southpaw so I could tell it depend on the type of southpaws you fighting some are slow paced and some are fast-paced fighter

but what i do is to jab with similar to Hashem Rahman's' jab where a slip jab and lower may head abit as well as i put my feet forward then that will make an opening to the stomach and sometimes to the temple or chin

First thing you need to learn to cope with a south paw is how to catch the jab with your left hand then shoot it over the top of his right hand jab. Everyone says use right hand lead, but I disagree. They are easier to get in through the gaurd of a southpaw, but its still a right hand and uses alot more energy than a jab. You basically need to fight the same way that a southpaw fights.

I would recomend watching fights of Hector Camacho as he demonstrates how to catch a jab with your jabing hand and then counter over the top very well.

How about practising switching your own stance? Perhaps come at him with a southpaw stance also, every so often during the rounds. He is just as likely to be thrown by a right jab as you are.

Only draw back is that you will obviously not be as comfertable as him in that stance- however the ability to switch is a great tool.

                  Some basics against southpaws

Keep your lead foot on the left side of the south paws and roll to your left.

Jabs work great against southpaws if you know whats up. Keep your left hand higher then the southpaws jab hand and work over it. A jab to the body is the easiest shot to land on a southpaw, just get low when you do it.

Wanna land the right hand on them, chill out abit and quit rushing in with the lead rights. Try waiting for the south paw to throw his jab, slip your head to the left and just stick out your right hand. They will run right into it. When you get comfortable doing this then you can load some power in the shot. Get a man afraid to throw his jab and a big part of the fight is already yours.

Lead right hands to the body work well all the same, just watch out not to collide heads when you do it.

Hope this helps you abit. Try these things a bunch of times and you will get the rythme/timing to control the fight...........Rockin'

yeah thanks for all the advice, I've never had a problem getting my offence off against southpaws its just that Im not yet used to slipping and sliding as well against them. I'll make the ajustment for sure now next time im in with a southpaw.
