  • Suggestions Needed in a Few Areas

Now that I'm done with football, and closing in on graduation, I have found my way back into boxing for good this time.

When I was training back in like 2004-2005, I was weighing about 165, and could probably fight comfortably at about 155 lbs. I have gained some weight since then, both muscle and fat. I weigh about 195 lbs. now, but I'd like to drop down to at least 180 lbs. However, some have told me I should keep at 195 lbs. and work on strength, rebuild with muscle but stay big. What do you think? I know I need to lose some weight, and gain some muscle, but I don't know if I should drop all the way back down.

Another question; when I'm wrapping my hands, for some reason my pinky finger on my right hand is very sore at the end of my session. I wrap it fine, and it's the right way, but for some reason it is always sore, I don't know if i'm wrapping too tight in that area or what. Also, my knuckles have been bleeding after bagwork, even though I'm wrapping properly. Some have said use toilet paper around your knuckles before the handwraps.

Also, any excercises besides sit ups/crunches to lose some fat in my abdominal section, anyone know anything good?

In response to loosing fat in your abdominal section, it is very simple

      1) Diet
      2) Cardio

If you really wanna box plzzzz come down to atleast 175....you'll be stronger and add speed too your weapons...

And honestly... boxing is in a extremely new era... anything less than 6'0-6'3 is no longer considered tall for a dominated heavyweight division ...your division(cruiser weight) is field with people around 6... if you'd like a height advantage light heavy would be nice for you..

That of course is speaking from the future of you going pro if you have those plans...

The Am's haven't quite stepped up to the qualifications in stature and size of the pro's but that would give you a even bigger adavntage if you do it now.

Hope this helped... rate if it did... 1

I've been reading some of your posts today and you know what you're talking about, we used to have a guy like you in here, but he stopped posting awhile ago, I rated you 5 as a poster.

Anyway, yes it did help, thanks alot. It sounds like a good plan, I don't feel comfortable at 195 lbs. at all, I have some losing to do.

Thanx man... But GLAD I Could HELP

Boxing needs all the boxers to get better... we're losing to so so many sports ... We were once the top sport in the world... now we're setting up our last huge mega fight (The Golden&Pretty boy)....Unless tyson and ALI find a youth drug the next generation is gonna have to be better equipped and extremely entertaining...

and have the solid competition to on the same level so they can show skill...

I said somthing in a post I've written on here... when someone good said something about quiting boxing...I told them too continue boxing.. because we need all the boxers we can get.. You never know who will be the good and great boxers that everyone knows and likes too watch...and boxing really needs those guys.. because without them greats there can be no legends...

Legends NEED good and great boxers to solidify their spot in history... Thats why I am happy for mayweather ...He needs oscar (who is a good almost great boxer that everyone loves too watch) to to make his mark... too bad it took so long and too bad corrales and zab are his only good level boxers with good names.. maybe throw castillio in there....

Point is that im trying to be a legend that will be talked about forever.

              Foreman was great/good...
              Liston was good/great..
              Frazier was was Great...
              chuvalo was a GOOD warrior...

The list goes on but you already know the legend that beat these great fighters. Without them...would you?

That status is a place that I am FAR from... i'm not even close but i'm inching closer everyday... and any knowledge that I can give away makes that status clearer for me in the long run... or maybe I'm making it clearer for one of you.

I don't agree. If you've ever seen Cuban, Russian, or German amateurs, you'll see how HUGE they are for their weight. Especially the Cubans. They'll train half the night in sweatsuits before fights in international tournaments to get into weight. I used to joke around with this lightweight I had, who lost about 8-10 lbs before every fight, that if he'd been Cuban, he'd be a flyweight.

I've also seen a Ukranian featherweight, who was 6'1" (that is taller than Corrales, who was a lightweight...)

In regards to the weightloss, it's all about diet and keeping your training high. No magic exercises (you burn fat all over your body, you can't "choose" where to lose it). Boxing training is perfect for weightloss, because contrary to popular myths (such as the "fatburn zone", ugh..), high intensity training is better for fatloss than steady state aerobics, like jogging.
Aerobics causes muscle atrophy in the long run, where intense anaerobic and strength oriented training preserves (during diet), and builds (with enough food) muscle.

As for the handwrap thing... Sorry, but obviously you're NOT wrapping your hands properly. If you did, they wouldn't be bleeding afterwards, plain and simple. Get people at the gym to show you some different ways of doing it, and experiment until you find an approach that works for you.
The thing about your pinky could be because of the way you punch, how you land your shots. If they land cleanly, with the middle knuckles, then your pinky should be okay.
