  • Over Training, Speed Bag Purpose, General Questions

Ok, I Got A Couple Questions. First, What Is The Purpose Of The Speed Bag? Is It Just A Cardio Thing? Its Not Like You Would Really Through Punches In The Same Way You Hit A Speed Bag, Right? Or Is There Something Else Im Missing? And Im Guessing The Heavy Bag Is Less Cardio, More To Work On Strength And Form, Correct?

Third, How Many People Here That Truly Work Out Like An Animal, Im Talking Wake At 6 Am, Running , Pushups, And Perhap Some Weight Lifting, Avoid Over Training Muscle Groups? Do You Take Day Time Naps To Aid In Recovering, Or Do You Use A Lot Of Supplements, Protien, Creatine, No2, Etc? Do You Have 2-3 Rest Days Per Week, Where You Just Let Your Body Recouperate? Thanks To Any One Who Replys With Info.

    Speed bag hones your timing.

When you let your hands go in the ring you won't be hitting a stationary target. You hit a target that bounces back at you and the speed bag resembles that.

Up at 5 am run, then do some skipping sometimes. After school skip, exercises. No weights. Some days I spar some days I do bag work etc finding it hard lately due to gym time and injuries. Shadow sparring and stuff. Just set your alarm for same time each morning maybe 1 day rest a week dont give up

I've talked to three different coaches about the speed bag and they all said its not really a necessity when it comes to training. They all prefer the reflex bag, and double end bag.

Yea I've heard of that too.... Though it troubles me because i love the speed bag...
now when I do it i think of all the good trainiers that don't make it mandatory..
makes me feel like im wasting a lil time in the gym... SAD

Ya, I guess you can say I train hard, three times a day if nothing messes up my schedule.

Honestly, I don't even touch the speed bag, I'm on the double bag all the time, almost as much as the heavy bag.

The speed bag is for looking cool. Really does almost nothing for you. It is good for shoulder conditioning and little else. The hand/eye coordination it takes to do the speed bag has no transfer to throwing real punches. I can put someone on the speed bag and have em doing it like Sugar Ray Leonard in a month...but it aint gonna do **** for them in the ring.

The benefit is minimal, and should not be a big focus in your training. Don't think its gonna help you gain significant skill cuz its not.
