I've been plagued over the last 2 years with hand problems resulting from boxing, everytime i get close to a fight they become injured and i have to pull out, very frustrating after the work.

The pain always comes from punches, and it hurts my thumbs in both my hands, which in turn spreads throughout my whole wrists. And my thumbs become so sore i cant even bunch a fist with them.

After I rest them for a while ice etc and i try spar or whatever again, they always bust, with no warning coming.

I have tried different physios, resting them for months on end, wrapping up my hands differently, punching lighter, trying exercises with them, ive pretty much done everything except operation.

Is there anything out there that coul dhelp strengthen my hands? Call for help here..

        Thanks

This is a common problem, and it is largely a function of the trends in modern training. Young guys spend too much time pumping iron and not enough time doing proper boxing training. Fifty years ago boxers did pushups on their fingers, but this has been replaced by the bench press. The tradional belief in boxing is that doing pushups on your fingers and knuckles strengthens the bones. I don't know if this has been proven, but I do know that hand injuries are much more common now than they were in the past.

As to whether your problem is related to your training or whether there is another explanation should be determined by a physcian.

Well, there are physicians and then there are physicians. If you can, try to see one who is a specialist in sports medicine. It is sad to say, but some injuries take months or even years to heal. You may have to limit yourself to general fitness training and shadow boxing for 6 months or more.

Ive got quite a large build and have small hands for my size. I like to do push-ups on my knuckels and use a powerball aswell. Never really had any problems.

Hi, Veldrak. I have been pretty serious about boxing, MMA, and traditional MAs for a while now; mainly boxing lately. I even have a series on youtube. Just go into its search engine and type in "tactical boxing series" and you'll see "Todd the Wild Cat Christopher." anyway, in it i talk about how your fist strikes the bag under your glove. Many traditional martial artists say they don't respect boxers because they use gloves that mask their bad knuckle to wrist alignment. But, well trained boxers know that striking the bag squarely with good fist alignment is very important and you need good gloves to make this happen. That is why i found your question and its surrounding discussion, so interesting, i have been investigating and discussing this as well. Please check out my videos and let me know what you think as a boxer in general and also how it applies to your specific issue.
