I've always heard that you should space out lifting sessions by a day of resting that muscle group, but I also hear a lot of people talk about doing pushups and situps everyday. Are these an exception or would it be more beneficial to do them every other day?

traditional pushups are fine to do every day. Handstand pushups, maybe not so much. It's all about resistance it doesn't matter where the resistance is comin' from. If it's 50lbs its 50lbs be it from your body or a dumbell. People get really hung up on body weight exercises. We had a good long thread about this goin' a while back. If you can't find it on the search, I'll tell you about some of the ideas.
Honestly, I think some of these common nutrition/training questions should just be put up and stickied in an FAQ, cause the same questions keep poppin' up.

Theres resistance in a regular pushup too, just not very much. I guess maybe since the reps are so high its more of a muscle endurance exercise then a strength building thing and thats why it doesnt require rest? I'll search the thread later, thanks for the heads up.

np, ya man, thats the right line of thought. At least for someone in decent shape at least. If you were in really bad shape or something, then the resistance provided by a normal pushup would actually be significant, and you would tear enough fibers to warrant a rest the next day. If you are gonna do pushups every day, I wouldn't push myself to failure every day though.

I'm guessing that press ups are fine to do everyday as it's more of a anaerobic exercise. I also agree that it does depend on what kind of shape your in. I remeber when I first started doing push ups as 18 stone teenager, man it was tough! I used to bust a gut just doing 5 of em! But it really helped to build up my shoulders and chest at the time.

There is no limit to the amount of situps and pushups you should do. The same goes with Bicep curls and calve raises.
Those muscles are impossible to make grow, and as for pushups you aren't using enough weight to hurt your muscles to the point where they need to recup.

Same as your calves once they've noticeably increased in size and defenition.....it then becomes a struggle to even maintain that size and defenition. You have to work twice as hard just to keep gains.
Your back is the easiest part to grow on your body. That's why everyone takes a photo of their back muscles.......LOL.
