    Hey Flatliner,

Good to see a fellow Canadian around here. First off, it is harder to get into boxing here than in the States, but that doesn't mean it can't be done. I live around Toronto which basically america with more immigrants, so it's not too hard for me. Living on the east coast might be tougher, although I also don't know all that much about east coast boxing. Just make sure you go to a real boxing gym, that'll give you certified boxing trainers. You don't wanna end up in some B.S. "boxing class" which is just a bunch of fat women doing aerobic boxing to drop those pregnacy pounds. The canadian amateur boxing will have a link to all the "official" boxing gyms in your province. I suggest you look at that. I'm deciding whether or not to start going to a gym now, as I don't have all the money in the world, so I'm not gonna start paying for training before 6 months before I wanna fight (far from ideal I know). So for now I kinda train myself, haha, not to mention teach others (who seem to think I'm a pro because I have 3 types of gloves, haha). Judging by your post in my thread, I'm assuming you have a heavy bag to work on, so you should be able to do all this. Basically, it's a 6 day program, I guess any 6 days, personally I prefer to rest up on Sunday, your choice. Monday, Wed, and Fri, is heavybag work for an hour in the morning. Mix it up between just doin' rounds, a round or two of "power boxing" and then of course punch-outs. In the evening hit the gym. Remember, while explosive power is good, your not really going for overall strength. You don't wanna be all bulky. So for example on the bench, I do fast up, and slow down, this will help work on tone and explosive power. As far as weights go, do what works for you. Tues, Thurs and Sat are more for conditioning. There's a rowing machine in the rez I live in, so in the morning I go hard on that at max resitance for 4 rounds, each of three minutes, with a minute between. In the afternoon I do stair stepping. I find this is very important, espcially if skipping isnt your thing. It builds anaerobic endurance (The most important in boxing) and your footwork. Finally at night, I go running (never more than 5km, you dont wanna die) and then shadowboxing plus shadowboxing with 2lbs-5lbs in each hand, to improve hand speed (don't do this too long, as it can develop bad technique). The sometimes I do the running after the shadowboxing, always good to mix it up.

So there it is, my personal workout. That should get you ready to go into the gym in a few months. Also, don't forget to watch the great boxers on YouTube or something, that helps more than you might think. I'm 19, 6 feet, and after my little weight gain, around 160, and as I trim it up, I may stay at 160, or go down to your 150 (I was 135, haha). So we're in a similar boat. Around what city to you live? How old are you? If you're around my age this should work for you. If you're like 14 or something, this might be a little too much at once though. Good luck man, I'll see ya around,

i live in Prince Edward Island, not too far from Charlottetown (which is where the boxing gym is) and im 17. i used to live outside of Toronto, about 40 mins out, ever hear of Angus? lol, its in the Barrie/Orrillia(sp?) area.

thanks by the way for taking the time to reply to this as no one else had. ill definatly get started on that schedule as it sounds pretty good. ive been doin that kinda as of late. just like every second day warmup skipping/shadowboxing, then hit the bag a bit bit more skipping, i also made a crappy homemade slip bag, so ive been tryin that out lately. on the other days i use free weights that i have and tone up a bit with those. im gettin a speedbag soon, god i love them, when i used to box i was gettin pretty good on it. the problem is with the style i fight i could really use a helper, to hold mitts and stuff like that. my cash flow is pretty crappy seeing as how i dont have a job, but do you know any good/cheap equipment that you would recommend? i have wraps, bag gloves, skipping rope, heavy bag, gettin a speedbag soon, homemade slip bag, target mitts, and free weights. any recommendations?

Well if you have all these things, for now I wouldn't really recommend anything else. Especially if you're one a short budget, save that money for boxing training, because even if your train alot on your own, you'll need real training badly. I do really recommend a partner. What I didis went out and found a friend who wanted to learn to box, kinda. So I teach him a few things, and he spars with me, helps with target practise, helps with slip practise and so on... It's a good arrangement, he learns a bit about boxing, and I get the second man help that I need until I can hire a real trainer. My buddy is also a smart guy, and helps alot with workout advice and nutrition. Also, he's no slouch, and will probaly be a good sparring partner with a few months training. So I'd really recommend doin' somethin' like that. What's your homemade slip bag like?

Honestly, no man, I haven't found any. I've been on a hunt for that, especially now, with my plans to set up this gym. Sports stores sells heavy bags, gloves and the like, but nothing specific. Try asking at the boxing gym, they may have ideas, or be able to order it and sell it to you.
