  • Training when ill

How many of you train while you are ill.

At the moment my Lymph Glands have swollen up, probably due to a mild infection (I can feel a pea shaped lump on my neck, just under my ear).

I feel just a little light headed- this comes and goes- and I started with a sore throat, though this seems to have gone now.

My coach says he always used to train when he was ill to 'sweat it out'. Im told by my doctor that this is an old mentality, but a physio friend of mine recomended trying it.

I work out side doing fairly physical work, and its cold in the uk now. Im going snowboarding in Canada over new year, and reeeaaalllyyy dont want to be ill for that, but I just cant stand not training. Im sure you all understand.

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Cheers

My parents have always told me that it lengthens the time you're sick and makes you weaker to train while you're sick(assuming it's not physical but bacterial or viral)

you can get away with doing some light stuff if it's just a cold but it doesnt seem like a good idea to train intensely if you have anything like the flu.

never train with viral infections, which by the sounds of it is what you have, a virus has to live its course there is no way of killing it, so if you train while the virus exists your body won't have the neccesary energy needed to help fight off the virus, don't train, sleep, get plenty of liquids, and sleep some more.

I never was sick when I trained, but our trainer wanted us there, unless we were throwing up and basically on our deathbed.

Arturo gattis first fight of 2000 proved to be controversial, however. Faced with former world champion Joey Gamache, Gatti won by a knockout in round two. But when Gamache went into a coma for a day and it was discovered that Gatti had gained 19 pounds since the weight-in the day before and thus had a large advantage in size over Gamache, boxing legislators pushed for a new law requiring boxers not to exceed a certain amount of extra weight from the weight accorded on the day of the fight. Gatti was also accused by Gamache's handlers of not having actually made the contracted weight of 141 lbs. After Gatti-Gamache, boxing commissions started weighing the boxers a second time, on the day of the fight.

Gatti then won his two other fights that year, over lesser quality name opponents.

You need to see a doctor to rule out a strep infection which could progress to scarlet fever. Realistically, it sounds like you need some antibiotics, but you can still train if you feel up to it.....

              I feel up to it.

I hate not training. I will try it tonight, and if it gets worse then I will stop, but I feel ok at the moment.

Forgot to mention- my glands where up for about a week before I had any symptoms.

I did a search on the internet, and it said it would probabaly be able to take care of itself.

If any one knows much about lymph glands would be wicked to get more info.

              cheers

Gee, I just happen to know a little about lymph glands. They intercept bacteria and other bad things the body doesn't want circulating all over the place. That's why they get swollen. Bacteria, toxins (poisons), etc. are trapped in the lymph glands, and the body tries to get rid of them. Unfortunately, these toxins must leave the body somewhere, e.g kidneys, bowels, etc., and can cause a lot of damage going out, so you need to see a doctor, as I noted originally......
