I must check that book out. I know there was a lot of hate involved between Emile and Paret so it would be interesting to see how that tragedy effected Griffith's boxing.

It might have been the lay-off rather than Holmes' age that was the biggest factor.

When somebody beats up somebody they would generally be given the decision. Holmes beat up on an over rated Mercer but LOST to Holyfield.

I don't think Mercer was overrated. He was a gold medal winner at the olympics, was the first man to beat Tommy Morrison and Hung very well with both Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis. He said the Morrison win went to his head.

I still think Holmes' lay-off was the big factor in his Tyson defeat. It's the best name on Tyson's resume, but it's still tarnished.

I was never very impressed with Mercer, but your right he hung in with some tough guys.

While I do believe that at 39 years old Holmes was on the down side of the hill I still have to agree that the lengthly layoff played a big part.

I havent talked with you much paul750, you seem like a very reasonable guy. Good to talk with ya.....................Rockin'
