Morales using Reyes gloves for early kill

LAS VEGAS—AS INDICATORS COME and go, none is as set as stone as the gloves Erik Morales will wear in his fight against Manny Pacquiao. Or as the moment Morales starts prancing around the ring in an effort to stay out of the range of Pacquiao’s power punches.
Or so Freddie Roach believes.
The American trainer says the gloves Morales will be wearing will confirm whether the Mexican superstar will indeed go for the kill early, as what the Filipino ring sensation’s camp predicted.
“He ordered Reyes gloves and [the] Reyes [company] confirmed that with [Pacquiao lawyer] Nick Khan,” said Roach.
Pacquiao will also use the Reyes gloves, which he wore when he stopped Morales, for the first time in his career, in January.
The Reyes gloves are typically a puncher’s gloves. Morales usually prefers wearing the Winning gloves because they have thicker cushioning.
“This time, if he’s wearing them, it means he’s not concerned about hurting his hand so much,” said Roach. “He’s concerned about an early knockout.”
Another indication, Roach said, is the way Morales spaces the ring. If he keeps the ring small by engaging Pacquiao in a phone-booth brawl, then it means the Filipino will have a battle in his hands. The moment Morales widens the ring by dancing around, it means victory is at hand for Pacquiao.
“The only time Erik Morales will run is when it’s all over,” said Roach.
