Showtime Networks, Inc. today announced that they are joining the mixed martial arts fray, battling the largest MMA organization in the United States, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, for viewers.

In partnership with Pro Elite, Inc., Showtime plans on airing their first live MMA event on February 10, 2007.
While no specific schedule was mentioned, the announced commitment is to continue airing events through the year 2009, with all of the broadcasts available in high-definition in addition to standard-defintion.

In making the announcement, Ken Hershman, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Sports and Event Programming at Showtime Networks, stated, “Having seen the great success of Ultimate Fighting Championship on basic cable and pay-per-view, we knew that this programming held great potential for Showtime.” He continued, “MMA is a global phenomenon that is impossible to ignore. This will be the perfect complement to our boxing franchise and we are proud to be the first premium network to embrace it. We can’t wait to deliver these action-packed events to our subscribers.”

The televised events on Showtime will be co-produced by Pro Elite, Inc.’s Douglas DeLuca (producer of Jimmy Kimmel Live) and Gary Shaw (former Chief Inspector of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Commission and long-time promoter of several major boxing events) along with Rumble World Entertainment’s Jay Dee Penn.

The inclusion of Penn is of particular note to MMA fans as his company promotes the Rumble on the Rock events in Hawaii that featured his brother, former UFC Welterweight Champion BJ Penn, in several early shows.

I saw this about a month ago, but didn't know Showtime would be getting into this bull****. MMA probably won't die out any time soon, but UFC surely will, being the weakest of all of them. If anything, this could be good news. With this competition, and more and more people realizing that UFC (not to be confused with pride) blows, it can only do harm to their sport. The different mma fanbases are already starting to split. Boxing has been around this long. It's not going to die. It's time people like Mayweather actually give back to their sport, and start opening more local gyms, etc. If that doesn't happen, you can blame people like that for selling out the sport that made them millions.

every recent ufc show has done at least 600,000 ppv buys...

the pacman vs morales even though i am ordering it will be going up against the mega attraction of the new wave UFC! on nov 18 same day shows.

PACMAN vs morales 3 the grand finale will do maybe 200,000 ppv buys.

and the ufc 65 will do maybe 650,000 ppv buys.

honest estimation....remember that most bars are not showing the pacman fight they are showing the ufc fight that night...so it will account for half of hte ppv sales.

Gary Shaw is a dip****, the writing is on the wall, 1 promoter is taking over the entire sport of boxing (which will be a good thing) and Shaw isnt that 1 promoter.

200 thousand ppv, you're insane. If you want to talk about ufc, go to the ufc section.
