That is just incorrect.

I believe that in that time period of the Dark Ages, people were about 5'4" inches. Their diet consisted mostly of breads and salted meats. THose that lived by the coastal areas tended to be taller due to the trade routes bringing in more nutritional food items.
Even into Napoleon Bonapart's era, he was of average height which was 5'4". George Washington was a giant for his day.Comment

The average human height has fluctuated due to nutrition and living conditions. Average male now is 5'8"-5'9" and the same was true in the middle ages, but during the industrial revolution this number dropped. Humans are not getting increasingly taller or anything, it's just that we have better nutrition on average than people living in the industrial revolution.
The average is 5'10.
I know people below that try to lower it.Comment

Napoleon Bonaparte was 5'6" and consider on the short side for his era. The average man was NEVER 5'4" in last few hundred years. 5'4" was always considered short for a man, except for maybe an ancient neanderthal and even then he'd be slightly below average.
I'm 5'9", and the 5'8" comes from a census. 5'10" is above average for an earth male in 2006. I'm talking world average, not american average.Comment
