EDIT: Even IF they averaged 5'7 they would still be smaller by today's standards where people 6'3 and 6'4 are fairly common. But like I said, I've never seen anything close to that.
In comparison to the modern humans that came in contact with Neanderthals in their time, they were about the same height.

Neanderthals may have been shorter than us on average but bone structure wise they were much, much stronger. A 5'7" neanderthal would probably tear Valuevs throat out before he could defend himself. Neanderthal vs. man is more like an ape vs. a human. Structurally, we are very frail in comparison, from our skulls to our rib cages to our hands to our legs and feet.
