They averaged about 5'5" to 5'7". That was on par with the modern humans in that time. "Short" or "Tall" is a relative term since back in the 1500AD, the average height for humans was about 5'5" or less.

The only idiot here is you.

Neanderthals were short and stocky, but not under 5 foot.

        5'5-5'7 sounds about right.

              He's a ****.

Parody: I haven't heard that, people have generally gotten bigger over time, a few hundred years ago, people who were 6 feet tall would be called a giant.

The average human height has fluctuated due to nutrition and living conditions. Average male now is 5'8"-5'9" and the same was true in the middle ages, but during the industrial revolution this number dropped. Humans are not getting increasingly taller or anything, it's just that we have better nutrition on average than people living in the industrial revolution.

From what I just read .. KID is right.. During the Middles ages it was not considered uncommon for men to be 6ft+ it declined during the industiral ages.. and has begun to rise dramaticaly during the last 100 years (almost 6 inches) due to medical advances and urban living.. does NOT explain why urban living has an affect..
                    SIlly BUT funny thread!

In a museum I saw some suits of armor from the Middle Ages and they were like 5'4''. And the people who would have worn them would have been the upper classes, the best fed.
