  • Trinidad interested in fighting Calzaghe

As WBO and IBF super-middleweight Joe Calzaghe contemplates conquering America, the legendary Sugar Ray Leonard was today on hand to give him so advice about just how to do so.

The pair talked privately for around 20 minutes ahead of a London press conference, before fielding questions about the impact of Calzaghe's stand-out win over Jeff Lacy and his HBO debut on Saturday.

Meanwhile Calzaghe's promoter Frank Warren revealed he has opened negotiations with Danis promoter Mogens Palle for the Welshman to meet WBC/WBA super-middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler in February a unification fight on HBO.

If that fight takes place it will probably do so in Europe - with Cardiff's Millennium Stadium, a 40,000 capacity and a 2am start time the favoured option for Warren - but there is a possibility that Calzaghe could travel to the States in February to make his debut on American soil.

Bernard Hopkins may be tempted out of retirement for a $10million purse, while Ronald Winky Wright and Jermain Taylor are also viable options.

And early on Monday, former welterweight light-middleweight and middleweight world champion Felix Trinidad expressed an interest in fighting Calzaghe.

US consultant to Sports Network, Jay Larkin, described the opportunities now awaiting Calzaghe as "endless", while a spokesman for HBO said the 34-year-old's hard-fought points win over Sakio Bika had impressed all those watching in the states.

Leonard also admitted to being impressed in the highlights he had seen, and backed Calzaghe, who drew 4.82million viewers on ITV1, to beat Hopkins - and for that matter anyone else - if he could repeat his Lacy performance.

"I think Calzaghe's style, if he repeated what he did against Lacy, the way he fought, if he fights anyone that way he will win. That was so masterful, that was perfect, that was so sound he can beat anyone."

It was in a newspaper today that HBO want to arrange a fight next year in Madison Square Gardens between Hopkins and Calzaghe. Hopkins will get $10 million for the fight.

I am not sure Hopkins will bite since he might get more for Oleg...I don't even think Hopkins is worth 10 million anyway, but oh well, if you can get paid, I guess you take it...

Is is just me or do these fights excite you, but at the same time leave you saying, what for? : Hopkins vs Calzaghe would of been a great fight after Bernard beat Tito, but that didn't happen: Hopkins was trying to get the "smaller" guys to step up so he can steal their lunch money...Winky is a 154 pound fighter...Tito gets exposed by three "boxers" (yes, that includes his first real loss against Oscar)...and a fight vs Taylor, like I said before, is unfair to Taylor because he is trying to put a legacy in place, just like Joe was allowed to at 168.

        I would of liked to see Joe have fought Roy years ago as well, before Roy's move up to fight Ruiz...you would think Joe would of came to America then, but I guess it wasn't as important to beat a "Top Guy" back then...Wouldn't that have been great though? : After Woods, a fellow Islander, got his ass beat by Jones Jr. that would of been a great time to say, "You knocked him down, why don't you try knockin me down" {Rocky V}

Tito is not the same fighter, plus he was a welterweight and couldnt' hack it at middle.
Hopkins is not the same fighter
Winky and Taylor are in the same boat
Lacy, I guess I wouldn't mind seeing that again

For Kessler, I have only seen two fights, some clips, and hate to say it, but something about him as of right now doesn't seem "Special", or "Elite"...maybe I am expected to much because I watch to many fights of the past with "Great" fighters, not sure, but he does seem like he has good power, which is exciting.

Calzaghe is probably a bigger name in the US than he is in the UK now (outside of Wales).

            Trinidad? Dear god.

Looks like Joe is most definitely fighting in the US next then. Is that a good thing?

              Is he?

Not that many people pay attention (sadly) to boxing anymore in the States

10% of the british public watched his last fight. That's pretty good for a Saturday evening. You might be right though.

They didn't really advertise it, but the Audley Harrison-Danny Williams fight got over 8 mil (nearly twice as many viewers) didn't it?

Could it be that my boy has helped kill a fledging terrestial audience? I guess we'll find out when Audley comes back in December... he perhaps promotes a career spike from people who want to see him get KO'd. Tupac, Tupac!

I doubt Hopkins will fight Calzaghe, but Roy Jones might be a good possibility. Trinidad will never fight Calzaghe because Warren will never be able to raise enough cash to get Trinidad to fight. After being soundly beaten by Wright at 160, Joe has nothing to gain by pounding Trinidad at 168.
