Exactly. No way of knowing who was better since we can't put them in the ring as you said. There was skills, heart and stamina before our recent fighters. Now technology and supplements have helped modern athletes become better and sometimes "cheat" a little. you mentioned Hockey and NFL, which I'm not familiar with, however, could we say Barry Bonds would've broken Hank Aaron's record back in the day? see what I mean?

There were plenty of heavyweights around during the early Queensberry age that had used an outside boxing style to their benefit, and studies of fight reports on such fighters as Peter Jackson, Jim Corbett, Tommy Burns, Joe Choynski, Bob Armstrong, etc., etc. (to name but a few of many), all were described as using mainly an outboxing style in their fights.

Bareknucklers like Jem Mace, Mike Donovan, etc, were also described as using mainly a outboxing style.

Heck, even look up some information on Daniel Mendoza, and you'll see that he was given huge credit during his time for the scientific & clever outboxing approach he had to the sport.
Yogi... Its very hard to shut me up.. but you are doing a good job.. Obviously your general Boxing knowledge is superior to mine.. But as my final retort.. I will use English Football(soccer) The english invented it.. and for a long time they were the best at it.. Then the rest of the world caught on.. found flaws in their style.. expolited it, added new dimensions and changed the game.. Why would boxing be different?

I'm not at all familiar with English Football/Soccer and it's history (understament! I've never watched a game of soccer in my life), my friend, so I really don't know how to answer that.

            check and mate....

but i'll go you one further

mankind as a whole ... shall we compair cavemen to people of today?
would you take a brain surgens word in the early 1900s over one of today?
how about the steam train which has been in for over 100 years are we to compair that to trains of today?

matter of fact thats my best argument ...a train

before the 1900s they were crude rough rugged didnt stop too easily caused alot of wrecks
after words they tinkered with them and kept on untill you got what we have today....one train wreck happens and you hear about it for monthes

a train wreck is alot like loseing to a boxer....they happened often back in the day but they were seen as apart of the game or the luxury of moving people and things efficently

as time went on and fighters begain to modernize as did the trains ..loseing and wrecking became infrequent to what you see as it is today

a guy loses....hes done its over we never hear the end his rep is ruined
a train wreck happens...company loses money people lose trust we never hear the end of it ...rep is ruined

this thread depresses me...before i ****ed up my right hand it was so pinpoint accurate when i threw the straight right. i didnt **** it or anything and back then i didnt even know how to punch right but it was so straight perfect and powerful.....sadness is realized when a man looks in the mirror and sees a shadow of his former self...

how about Edwin Rosario's right hand? Haven't heard his mentioned yet. Boxing magazine editors say that his straight right hand deserves it's own plaque in the hall of fame.
